The First Global Congress of Women in Politics was held on 6 September 1995 at the Huairou NGO Forum alongside the UN Fourth World Conference on Women.
In preparation for this event, the following Regional Congresses of Women in Politics were held also at Huairou, People's Republic of China:
- Asia-Pacific (31 August - 1 September)
- North America and Europe (31 August - 1 September)
- Latin America and the Caribbean (2-3 September)
- Africa (3-4 September)
Participants to these regional congresses met to share the state of women's political participation in their respective countries and to brainstorm on their common goals as well as strategies in order to promote women's increased access to leadership and decision-making. They then brought their output to the Global Congress to share it with participants from other regions. At the end of the day, the participants to the Global Congress came up with a statement that was read during the UN Fourth World Conference on Women's plenary session on Women in Decision Making.
The participants to the Global Congress of Women in Politics also decided to have another Congress and asked CAPWIP to be the interim secretariat with Remedios Rikken (who is a CAPWIP Board Member) to serve as its interim president until a formal set of officers will be elected during the Second Global Congress.
